Lions finish 2-2 at Comet Duals

OLIVET, Michigan - This weekend the Lions traveled to Olivet, Michigan to compete in a dual meet versus Olivet, Grand Valley State, Muskegon, and Adrian. The Lions finished the day going 2-2 as a team, with 7 wrestlers finishing with a record over .500. 

In the first match of the day the Lions faced off against the Comets of Olivet College. The first two wrestlers got the Lions ahead early with a 7-2 win by freshman Tariq Hornbuckle (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) and a major decision 10-2 win by fellow freshman Jabari Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). But shortly after the Comets would gain control of the match with consecutive wins. Sophomore Antonio McCloud (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was able to come away with a big pin to bring the Lions back but it was not enough as the Lions lost a close one 27-16. 

Next, the Lions faced off against the Lakers of Grand Valley State University. The Lions got things started with a huge 16-1 win by sophomore Kaden Darbro (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier). The Lions would then go on and win every match including a pin by sophomore Charles Lipps (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and a 20-5 tech fall by sophomore Cameron Sauerwein (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison). The Lions would then get the victory with the final score showing 43-6. 

Then, the Lions would face the Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College. Tariq Hornbuckle got the Lions going with a pin to start off the match. Then sophomore Chase Haehnle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) would crush his opponent with a score of 17-2. Then, with back-to-back pins by Charles Lipps and freshman Amar Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) the Lions would take a commanding lead. After sophomore Tristan Faworski (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) pinned his opponent the Lions would come out victorious. The Lions dominated the Jayhawks in a 35-16 victory. 

Finally, the Lions would face the Bulldogs of Adrian College in their final match of the day. The dual would start of with a Tariq Hornbuckle win via a pin. Adrian would then take a match but the Lions would bounce back with big wins from Nate McClanahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Chase Haehnle, and Charles Lipps. Adrian would then battle back and take the lead. The Lions kept the score close with tough matches all around but would not be able to come back. The final score ended 21-15 with Adrian coming out on top. 

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday December, 7th when they travel to Ada, Ohio to compete at the Ohio Northern Invitational. Continue to check out MSJSports.com for more updates on the rest of the Lions 2019-20 season!
