CINCINNATI, OH - The Mount St. Joseph University Lions hosted the Grizzlies of Franklin College on a Saturday afternoon. This was an important game for the Lions as a victory here would give the women's basketball program their first winning record in over a decade! The Lions never let up the lead and finished the game making history with a final score of 73-65 for having a winning record for the first time in 15 years!
The Mount knew this was a big came and came out all ready for a fight. In the first quarter The Lions may not have been the first to get on the scoreboard but were the ones who controlled it. The Mount was leading the Grizzlies 21-11 with 15 of those points coming from successful 3-pointers.
In the second quarter The Mount kept their foot on the gas and were able to score an additional 17 points while holding Franklin College to 11 points once again. As the teams went to the locker rooms to get ready for the second half the score on the board read Lions 38 and Grizzlies 22. The Lions were unstoppable from the 3-point line, scoring 30 of their 38 points in the first half from behind the line.
In quarter number three Franklin College was able to outscore The Lions by 7 points. Even though the quarter did not belong to them The Mount never forfeited the lead and kept their on the prize. The teams went into the final quarter of the game with The Lions still in control with the score 51-42.
The Mount had the victory within arms length and knew that this last quarter was no time to give up. The Lions were almost perfect from the free throw line going 14-16 which aided in the outcome of the game. The Grizzlies were able to outscore The Mount once again but it wasn't enough to steal the win. The buzzer rang and the score had gone in favor of the hometown team with a final score of 73-65!
There were three lions that led this team to victory Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) was an all star for The Mount scoring 26 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mercy) made a splash racking up 21 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, OH/ Kings) scored 15 points all of with were 3 point shots.
