CINCINNATI, OH - The Mount St. Joseph University Lions hosted the Pioneers of Transylvania University in this Wednesday night matchup. The Lions are fourth in the conference and Transylvania are sitting in the first spot so this was a big game for The Mount. The Lions were defeated by Transylvania 49-69.
In the first quarter the Lions were able to get on the board first but the Pioneers know how to fight back. The Mount was not able to regain the lead as the time ran out in the first. They finished quarter number one trailing Transylvania 12-18 knowing they had ground to make up before halftime. As the second quarter began The Mount found themselves back 12 points with a long road ahead of them. The Mount was not able to gain footing in the second quarter and found themselves smothered by the Pioneers leading to The Lions having a halftime deficit of 14 points and the score of 25-39.
The third quarter followed in suit with the previous quarters and The Lions could not hit their stride and found themselves falling farther and farther behind. When the third quarter wrapped up the Pioneers lead had grown to 61-36. The Lions need to have an incredible final quarter if they wanted to take down the first place team in the conference. The fourth quarter came and went just as the three before it. Although the Lions were able to hold the Pioneers to 8 point in the last quarter and outscore them by 5 it was not enough. The game finished with The Mount falling short with a final score of 49-69.
Two Lions were able to score in the double digits. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mercy) recorded 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Senior Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) achieved 11 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals and an assist.
The Lions next game will be Saturday, February 9th at 1:00 PM in the Harrington Center as the first game in a double header. Continue to check MSJSports.com for more updates on the Lions 18-19 season!
