CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University hosted the Tigers of Wittenberg University to open their 2018-19 home slate on Wednesday. The Mount came away with a hard fought come from behind victory, overcoming a 21-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter to defeat the Tigers 68-63.

The first quarter was dominated by the Tigers especially on the glass, where they outrebounded the Lions 12-2. Which led to the Tiger registering 20 field goal attempts to the Lions only 11. Leading to The Mount facing a 14-point uphill climb the rest of the game.

In quarter number two the Lions began their charge to get back into the game. They outscored Wittenberg 26-17 in the second quarter to cut their halftime deficit to only five points. The Mount was much better on the backboards in quarter number two only being outrebounded by one. The star of the second quarter was Brooklynn Sturwold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) who was 3-for-3 from the field including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Lions came out of the halftime break still trailing the Tigers, but with a renewed energy because of the late second quarter run. The Lions would outscore the 35-25 over the final 20 minutes of play.

Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) led the way defensively for the Lions securing six steals, she also added 7 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) struggled from the field going just 2-for-12, but she did an exceptional job of attacking the rim, getting herself to the free throw line 7-times where she made all of her attempts. The team also got a big boost from its bench as Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, Ohio/Kings) and Alehia Tucker (Covington, Ky./Holy Cross) pitched in a combined 22 points and 8 boards.
