Last Saturday, the Mount Saint Joseph Cross Country team traveled to run in the Louisville Classic, a highly competitive meet with over 2500 runners from over 100 colleges. The meet (which took place in E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky) had perfect weather for a cross-country race, affording the team a spectacular opportunity to shine.
The 12 MSJ men ran their 8K first, with 10 personal records. Five of them were able to run under thirty-one minutes, with 3 running under thirty. Sophomore Luke Danis led with a 28:39.7, followed by Sophomore Matthew Bruner with a 29:42.7. Shortly behind him ran Freshman Trevor Levi, running a 29:50.1 on only his second race! Freshmen Tyler Pfeiffenberger also ran an outstanding race, improving on his original race time by seven minutes! The men placed 28th in their division. Great PRs, guys!
The 6 MSJ women ran their 5K next. It was a bit of an adjustment, as their normal distance is a 6K, but they were fierce on the course nonetheless. Senior Maria Waters led with a 20:27.0, followed by Senior Julia Cason with a 23:14.9, a career best for her at the Mount! The ladies placed 35th overall.
After the meet, the team had the opportunity to visit the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville, where they were able to learn about one of America's greatest athletes, and greatest humanitarians. Hopefully, he can serve as an inspiration to them as they continue to improve and build upon the great work they did at the Louisville Classic.
