The Lions have stellar first half but fall short on Senior Day

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On a chilly saturday night your Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Grizzlies of Franklin College. The Lions entered the game looking for one final conference win and more importantly honor the seniors who have suited up for the last 4 years.

At the start of the match senior Nathan Schmeusser (West Harrison, Ind./ East Central) would take a honorary kick off for the Lions on Senior Day. The Lions got their offense going right away. Michael Radcliffe (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Oak Hills) sent a pass in to captain Joshua Bailey (Winchester, Ky./ George Rogers Clark) who beautifully played the ball to Will Cissell (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Turpin) who chipped the ball over the keeper but a Franklin defender made a acrobatic save to keep the Lions out of the score column within the first minute. After that the Lions out shot the Grizzlies 8 to 4 before the Lions went ahead. In the 29th minute Will Cissell lined up for a throw in along the opposite sideline. After he threw the ball into the box a Franklin defender attempted to clear the ball but instead gave the ball to sophomore Cameron Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/ LaSalle). Willis was able to strike the ball straight to the bottom left corner giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. The Lions kept firing at the net and ended the half out-shooting Franklin 13-4.

At halftime, the Lions honored their three seniors on the squad. #7 Nathan Schmeusser, #23 Zachary Tegge (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), and #34 Alonzo Garcia Alvarez (Cleves, Ohio/Harrison) were all honored for their dedication to the Mount's soccer and Mount community over the past 4 years.

With the second half underway the Mount's offense slowed down but their defense stepped up. Goalkeeper Nathaniel Chambers (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) made two key saves to keep the Lions lead where it was. But shortly after the Grizzlies broke free on a breakaway ball heading toward the box. Franklin forward Jordan Thomas chipped the ball into the net equalizing the match at one goal a piece. The Lions tried to fire back with a pair of shots but were unsuccessful. The Grizzlies then with 10 minutes left to play let a shot go from 40 yards out and the ball rocketed into the top left corner to give Franklin the 2-1 lead. With the remaining 10 minute the Lions would get one more shot off but it didn't find the net. After 90 minutes of play the Lions fell to Franklin 2-1. The Lions totalled 19 shots while Franklin only tallied 14 as the Lions wrap up their 2019-20 season. The team finished the season with a 3-16 record and a 1-8 conference record. Check in next year to see the Lions try again to best the rest of the HCAC Conference. Great season boys!
