DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University men's basketball team traveled north to Defiance, Ohio to take on the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College. The Lions took advantage on an outstanding shooting night to defeat the Yellow Jackets 98-75.
The game was tight through the early going and was tied at six all with 15:24 to go in the first half. The Lions then went on a quick 15-4 run over the next 4:04 to take control of the game. The Mount maintained a lead of around 10 points for the next few minutes of play. From the 6:47 mark of the first half the Lions closed the first 20 minutes on a 15-5 run to carry a 51-28 lead into the half-time break.
The 51-point first half outburst was the highest scoring half for the Lions this season. They shot the ball extremely well going 19-for29 from the field, with 11 of those field goals coming from behind the three point line. Brady Thomas (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready) led the way for the Lions in the first half with 15 points and 6 assists. Jake Cropper (Georgetown, Ohio/Georgetown) came off the bench to score 11 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.
It was much of the same for the Lions in the second half as they continued their torrid offensive pace. Thomas added another 16 points in the second half and Cropper added 12. The Lions improved their unbeleiveable field goal percentage in the second half, going 17-24 from the field for 70.8 percent.
The offense set numerous season-highs for The Mount shooting a season-high 67.9 percent (36-53) from the field, and 62.5 percent (11-15) from behind the three-point line and scoring 98 points. Brady Thomas set a new career-high with 32 points leading four Lions in double-figures. Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched in 17 points, Tanner Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.) also set a new career-high with 13 points, and Cropper came off the bench to score 21. The Lions also dominated Defiance on the glass in this one, outrebounding the Jackets 32-18. Cropper and Clos each led the way with a game-high eight rebounds.
Up next the Lions (7-14, 5-9 HCAC) will travel to Lexington, Kentucky to take on the Pioneers of Transylvania University (13-8, 10-4 HCAC) on Wednesday. When the two teams met earlier in the season The Mount got a hard-fought 65-62 win in the Harrington Center.
