CINCINNATI, Ohio- On a day that the Mount St. Joseph University football team recognized the 2004 and 2009 that won Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, the 2019 team kept on track for their goal of winning the HCAC this season with a 59-6 win over Defiance.
The Mount's defense continued to shine in this one. Coming off a week in which they only allowing a pair of offensive touchdowns to Franklin, they nearly pitched a shutout against Defiance. They allowed only 233 total yard to a Defiance offense that came into the game scuffling a bit. They did allow the Yellow Jackets to rush for 123 yards in the game, but after some halftime adjustments they were much better in the second half. For the third game in a row the defensive effort was led by a four sack effort from the defensive line. Senior Spencer Kandra (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the way with a pair of sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Senior middle linebacker Sean Sullivan (Covington, Ky./Holmes) led the team with a game-high 11 total tackles. The Lions forced three turnovers in the game. Noah Able (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) picked off his third pass of the year, and Drew Sherman (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) got his first of his career which he returned for a touchdown.
Chaiten Tomlin (Mt. Orab, Ohio./Western Brown) continued his outstanding 2019 campaign. The senior signal caller put up a spectacular stat-line, going 25-of-35 passing for 396 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tomlin again spread the ball around well, with 12 Lions catching passes in the game. Cornell Beachem (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) made the switch this week from full-time wideout, to part-time wideout and part-time running back. Beachem gave the Lions a new look in the running game, despite only carrying the ball four times, he gained a team-high 61-yards and scored a touchdown. As a receiver he caught a career-high eight passes for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns. All told Beachem had 12 touches for 216 yards (18 yards per touch) and four touchdowns. Chase Pankey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) and Austin Brock (Gainesville, Ga./East Hall) each added four catches and a touchdown.
Tomlin will go into next weeks matchup with Manchester just two touchdowns shy of the all-time HCAC touchdown record.
The Mount St. Joseph Lions (4-0, 2-0 HCAC) will travel to take on the Manchester Spartans (1-3, 0-1 HCAC). The game will take place at Burt Memorial Stadium in N. Manchester, Indiana.
