ANDERSON, Ind. - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team travelled to take on HCAC competitor Anderson University in a double header on Saturday, April 6th. Multiple Lions found themselves crossing home plate in game one, bringing home an 11-10 win. Game two saw both The Lions and the Ravens have solid pitching through most of the game, until the Ravens were able to strike and hand The Lions a 7-2 loss, bringing The Mount's conference record to2-2.
GAME ONE | Mount St. Joseph 11 - Anderson University 10
Game one didn't start out in favor of The Lions as the Ravens were able to get on the board first with a trio of runs, but it wouldn't take long for The Lions to answer back, brining in multiple runs before both teams went back and forth in scoring through the 9 innings. Jason Fischer (Cincinnati,Ohio/Colerain) started on the mound for The Lions in game one versus the Ravens but was removed before recording an out due to injury. Jacob Hughes (Cincinnati,Ohio/LaSalle) would enter the game as the relief pitcher for Fischer. Hughes would pitch 7 innings for The Lions, facing 33 batters while allowing the Ravens to bring in 6 of their 10 runs while striking out 4 batters.
No Lions were able to make it home in the first inning, while the Ravens were able to score 3 and take an early lead. The game would then go back and forth as each team would score runs through multiple innings. Inning two saw The Lions taking the lead for the first time, as 4 Lions were able to score. Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati,Ohio/Northwest) was the first to score off a hit by Ryne Poli (Cincinnati,Ohio/Elder) to right field, earning himself an RBI. Next up to bat was Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati,Ohio/St. Xavier), who recorded himself 3 RBI on a double to left field, bringing in Michael Sundahl (Fort Wayne,Ind./Bishop Dwenger), Colin Crowe (Mason,Ohio/Mason), and Ryne Poli, building The Lions score to 4 as The Mount took a 1 run lead entering the 3rd inning.
The 3rd inning saw both teams bringing in runs. Scoring for The Lions was Brandon Shelton, who was able to make it home off a Michael Sundahl single to center field that resulted in an error by the Ravens centerfielder, giving The Lions a 5-3 lead. The lead wouldn't last much longer as the Ravens earned 2 runs, tying the game at 5-5. The Ravens would go on to hold The Lions scoreless through the next 3 innings as they added one more to their score and took the lead in the bottom of the 4th, leading The Lions 6-5, before going scoreless themselves through the next 3 innings.
It would take The Lions until the 7th inning before they were able to bring in more runs. Jose Bustamante (Austell,Ga/South Cobb) would step up to bat and get himself 2 RBI as he hit a double through the left side, bringing in Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati,Ohio/Western Hills) and Roman Rothwell (Monroe,Ohio/Monroe) Bustamante's double allowed The Mount to take the lead for the second time as The Lions built their scoring to 7.
The 8th Inning would see one Lion make it home as Ryne Poli would score off a Tyrell Anderson sacrifice fly to right field. The Ravens would get themselves a pair of runs in the 8th inning, as Wyatt Myers (Waynesville,Ohio/Waynesville) would take the mound for The Lions. Myers pitched 1.1 innings, facing 9 batters, giving up 5 hits, and allowed the Ravens to score 4 runs. 2 of the Ravens runs would come in the bottom of the 8th, when they tied up the game for the second time, with a score of 8-8.
The 9th inning saw more action from both teams, with The Lions up to bat first. Trey Siciliano (Cape Coral,Fla/Oasis) scored off a bases loaded walk from Simon Schaefer that resulted in his 4th RBI of the game. Garrett Hogan (Hamilton,Ohio/Hamilton) then entered the batter box, hitting a single through the left side and notching 2 RBI as Ryne Poli and Brandon Mueller (Cincinnati,Ohio/Northwest) came in to score The Lions final two runs. The Ravens would try to extend the game into extra innings by scoring 2 more runs before Garrett Hogan would relieve Wyatt Myers on the mound and record his second save of the season as The Lions narrowly defeated the Ravens by a score of 11-10.
GAME TWO | Mount St. Joseph 2 - Anderson University 7
Pitching would play a major role in game two for both The Lions and the Ravens. Alex Wagner (West Chester,Ohio/Lakota West) got the call to the mound for The Mount in game two as he would pitch for 6.1 innings, facing 29 batters, striking out 6, while allowing the Ravens to score 4 runs.
Both teams would get a run in the first inning before going scoreless through the next 4 innings. For The Lions, Ryne Poli would score, as Roman Rothwell would get his only RBI of the game from a fielder's choice. The Ravens would bring in one at the end of the 1st inning, making it a 1-1 game.
Dominant pitching would take over the game as neither teams' starting pitcher would let any more runs in. Wagner would strike out the side in both the 2nd and the 6th inning for The Lions before the Ravens were able to add more runs to their total. The Ravens would score 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning before The Lions sent Oakley Billingsley (Westport,Ind/South Decatur) to the mound to relieve Wagner. Billingsley would pitch the final 1.2 innings, facing 9 batters and allowing 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out 3 Ravens.
The Lions would get their final run of the game in the top of the 8th inning against the Ravens of Anderson University. Roman Rothwell would score on a Tyrell Anderson single through the left side. Anderson wasn't done scoring yet as they would add 3 more runs to their total before Billingsley struck out the final batter. Unfortunately, The Lions would end the day with a loss to the Ravens, as they were defeated 7-2.
The Lions will face the Harriers of Miami-Hamilton in a non-conference, single game matchup on the road. The game will take place on Wednesday, April 10th at 6pm at Miami-Hamilton as The Lions hope to come away with a victory.
