Mount St. Joseph baseball honors their six seniors

AMELIA, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team honored their six seniors in between games on Tuesday for Senior Day. The Lions were accompanied by family and friends as they were recognized for their commitment to the program.

The Mount, in their final home games of the 2018 campaign, hit the field against the Defiance Yellow Jackets in a doubleheader. Defiance scored fifteen runs in the first innings and did not look back as they took a 17-6 victory. Game two was hard fought by both teams as the Lions aimed for a late game comeback, but came within inches of tying the game in the 8th. Final score was 11-9, Yellow Jackets.

Game 1

Seniors Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) and Nathan Hunter (Vevay, IN / Switzerland County) were locked in at the plate with each Lion recording two RBI's. Hunter homered to left center in the seventh for his 2 and Schaefer doubled off the right field wall for his.

On the mound for the Lions was Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper). Renner's line included 2 earned runs off 10 hits and a strikeout in two innings of work. The Lions defense struggled defensively committing four errors in the game. Senior Brady Johnson (Peebles, OH / Peebles HS) entered the game in the fifth and halted Defiance in three innings and two hit baseball.

The Yellow Jackets offense was a hard unit to stop with seven different hitters recording a multiple hit game, totaling 19 hit and 17 runs.

Game 2

Defiance jumped out to an early lead in game two, reaching the plate six times in three innings. The Mount answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third off four hits. The Yellow Jackets scored one in the fifth and two more in the sixth, extending their lead to 6.

After two singles, Hunter would step to the plate and smash his second home run of the day and shrink the lead to 3 in the bottom half of the sixth.

The seventh proved fruitful for the Lions as they decreased the lead to one off a bases loaded walk from senior Luke Bowman (Harrison, OH / Harrison), his second RBI of the game, and a ground out that plated a run from Hunter.

Defiance would score two more runs in the final innings to the Lions one, resulting in a final score of 11-9.

Senior Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) and Mike Hilliard (Loveland, OH / Clinton Massie) made their 14th and 11th appearance of their senior season. Myers went 2 1/3 innings allowing one run off five hits and four strikeouts. Hilliard's line included 3 innings, three runs, three hits, and four strikeouts as well.

The Lions will travel to Hanover College to square off against the Panthers in a doubleheader this Saturday, 5th. First pitch of game is scheduled for 1 PM and 4 PM for game two. Check into for live stats and updates of the game.
