Location: Seiberling Gymnasium (Tiffin, OH)
The Lions participated in the No One Fights Alone Invitational at Heidelberg University where they faced the host school, Case Western Reserve, and Otterbein University. The Lions weren't able to come out with a win over the weekend, bringing their record to 5-8.
How it Happened:
MSJ vs. Case Western Reserve
The Lions started off slow, unable to earn the first few points out of the gate. The Lions found themselves at a deficit and struggled to bring the score back. In the final points the Lions battled to take back the set but weren't to find their way back and dropped the first set 25-21. The Lions picked up their play in the second set and would win the first five points of the set. The Lions continued their strong play and didn't lose the lead the whole set. The Lions won the set 25-13 on an attack error on Case Western Reserve. Both teams were now playing at peak potential and the match was a back and forth affair. Case Western Reserve was able to string together a few points towards the end of the set resulting in a narrow loss of set three, 25-20. The Lions started the finals set by earning the first four points but Case Western Reserve would counter and score the next eight points. The Lions battled to come back and did but Case Western was able to go on another run that would lead to their 25-21 and the match 3-1.
MSJ vs. Heidelberg
The Lions started off their second day of play slow and weren't able to find their momentum. Heidelberg got off to a big lead and didn't look back, taking the first set 25-13. The Lions picked up their offense in the second set and kept the score close. Heidelberg turned the tide in the final points to take a close second set 25-22. The Lions started the second set down a few points but were able to go on a run to tie up the score at 11. Heidelberg capitalized on the Lions errors to take the lead once again and they wouldn't look back, going on to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
MSJ vs. Otterbein
In the Lions final match of they were unable to come out the gate strong. The Lions were down most of the set and could overcome the deficit, falling in the first set 25-13. The Mount took an early lead in the second set but were quickly countered by Otterbein. The match was close halfway through but a string of Lions errors resulted in Otterbein runs. Otterbein pulled out a win in the second set 25-20. The Lions put it all on the line in their final set but found themselves down early. The Mount bounced back in the final points to bring the score within one point but Otterbein was able to close out the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Briana Looney led the charge on offense for the Lions with 34 kills over the three game weekend. Karlie Schell continues to dominate on defense with 52 digs over the weekend and 20 digs in the match against Otterbein.
