Mount St. Joseph faced Franklin College in the HCAC women's soccer championship Both the Lions and Grizzlies ended the first half scoreless. Franklin was able to score twice in the second half to take the lead. The Lions would get multiple shots at the goal, but were unable to connect to get back in the game. The Grizzlies would defeat the Lions with a final score of 2-0 for the HCAC title.
How it Happened:
The game was evenly matched, as both teams had similar playing styles. Both teams would go back and forth with possession trying to get into scoring position. The Lions were able to record four shots compared to the Grizzlies seven in the first half. The game was scoreless at the end of the first half, as both teams excelled in defense. Coming into the second half, the Lions looked to get more aggressive on the offensive side of the ball. Franklin only recorded six shots compared to the Lions 10. The Grizzlies were able to put the first goal on the board at the 50-minute mark. The Lions would try to get a goal to tie the game, but were unable to score after hitting the cross bar on multiple shots. Franklin was able to score again to increase their lead at the 67-minute mark. This made the score 2-0 with 23 minutes left in the match. Mount St. Joseph would get a couple more opportunities at the goal, but were unable to connect to get back into the game. The Grizzlies would end the match defeating the Lions for the HCAC title with a final score of 2-0.
The team fought well and had an amazing game. The Lions showed great determination and persistence on the defensive side of the ball. Morgan Knasel (Sidney, OH/ Sidney) led the team on the offensive attack with a total of four shots in the match. Mount St. Joseph ended their 2017-18 season with a record of 17-4 to finish as the HCAC runner up.
