CINCINNATI, Ohio-- The Mount St. Joseph women's soccer team has gotten off to a fast start in the 2017 season. They have opened the season 4-1 over the first two weeks of play. Including a dominant performance in the inaugural Mount St. Joseph University Tournament, going 2-0 winning their own tournament. Their last two games have been their most dominant of the season thus far, defeating Spalding and Berea by a combined 9-0 score. Their lone loss on the season was to Mount Union who is 3rd in the Great Lakes Region, and in the "also receiving votes" portion of the National top-25.
They have relied on a balanced team effort to open the season. Offensively they have been led by the goal scoring of Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH/ Harrison who has three goals so far this season. Four other Lions are tied for second on the team with two goals each. Defensively they are led by Centerback and reigning HCAC defensive player of the week, Madeline Rechel (Harrison, OH/ Harrison). They have also gotten outstanding play from Goalkeepers Michelle Hessling (Hamilton, OH/ Badin) and Lindsey Sturwold (Sidney, OH/ Sidney), who have combined to post two clean sheets so far this season.
After a very successful 2016 campaign the Lions expected to have a special year in 2017. They did not graduate a single senior off of last years squad that finished third in the HCAC last season, and finished with an 11-7-1 overall record.
