DEFIANCE, Ohio - The return of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference wrestling was on full display at the Karl H. Weaner Center on the campus of Defiance College on Thursday evening. Two-thirds of the HCAC schools who sponsor wrestling squared off for the first time this year. The Mount is in the midst of a Rebirth this season, and Defiance was hosting their first home dual in nearly three decades. The match would not disappoint as at the end the teams found themselves tied at 21, with The Mount winning the match based on tie-breaker rules.
The Yellow Jackets of Defiance got off to an extremely strong start dominating the early matches. The were able to get the win at 125, 133, 141, and 149 jumping out to an early commanding lead.
Chucky Lipps (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) finally got the Lions on the board at 157 lbs. Lipps won 5-2 over Devonte Gaskill of Defiance. Chase Haehnle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) followed that up with a win at 165, taking a 7-4 decision.
The Lions continued to roll as Tristan Faworski (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) got the win at 174, with an 8-4 decision. The Lions dropped the 184 pound match and were trailing in the match. The good thing for The Mount though is that their hammers reside in the 197 and 285 pound weight classes.
Antonio McCloud (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) at 197 has been ranked in the D3wrestling.com top-10 for much of the season and currently checks in at #11 on that list, and Cameron Sauerwein (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) who has placed in every tournament thus far this season. McCloud got the Lions lone victory via pinfall at 197 to get the Lions back into the match. Sauerwein followed that up with a victory at heavyweight to knot the team scores at 21.
After tie-breaker rules were taken into account the Lions were awarded the victory. Their total points in the match were higher than that of the Yellow Jackets.
The Lions will take to the mats again the weekend of January 25th in the Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. The Lions wrestling program is also extremely excited to host their first home dual in more than four years on Tuesday, February 12th. They will welcome the Cardinals of Otterbein to the Harrington Center, the match is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 PM.
