Lions defeated by Anderson in overtime nail-biter

LOCATION: Harrington Center (Cincinnati, OH)

Cincinnati, OH – The Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Anderson Ravens in the first game of a double header. The Lions held a lead all throughout the first half but a third quarter push by Anderson brough them back into the game. After a back and forth fourth quarter the game went to overtime and the Ravens pulled through at the end to defeat the Lions 76-72.

The Lions controlled the tempo in the first quarter and took an early lead. After a strong offensive quarter the Lions continued to push the pace in the second quarter. The Ravens made a few clutch shots halfway through the second quarter to bring the score back but the Lions held a 35-28 lead going into the half.

Anderson come out of the gate strong in the second half and challenged the Lions. The Ravens went on an 11-0 lead and took the lead from the Lions before the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was a roller coaster and neither team was able to gain any momentum to break away. In the final minute of play Anderson made a layup to take a three point lead but with 25 seconds left Alehia Tucker Covington, KY / Holy Cross) drained a three pointer on an assist from Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH / Mother of Mercy). After a broken play from Anderson the Lions prepared for overtime.

The Lions started overtime strong and took a lead in the early minutes. The Ravens picked up their play as the quarter progressed and were able to take a one point lead with one minute remaining. The Lions had to play the foul game in hopes of a missed free throw and a last second three pointer from Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH / Little Miami) wouldn't fall and the Lions dropped the match against Anderson 76-72.

Haberthy led the charge for the Lions on offense with 20 points and 3 assist. Makenzie Marcum (Mason, OH / Kings) played great minutes off of the bench, scoring 14 points on 4-7 from the three point line.

The Lions next match will be this Saturday 12/15 at Earlham College in Richmond, IN. The women's will be the first match of a conference double header at 3:00PM, followed by the men's at 5:00PM. Check MSJSports.com for more updates on the Lions season!
