NORTH MANCHESTER, IN - The Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Manchester University to take on the Spartans in their first conference matchup. The Mount once again came back from a first quarter 22-14 deficit to narrowly defeat Manchester 64-62.
The first quarter went to the Spartans who had eight rebounds to The Mount's four. Manchester was able to get eight 3-point attempts making half and leading to their eight point lead going into the second quarter, where The Mount had some ground to make up in order to secure the victory.
The Lions were led in their second quarter victory by Alehia Tucker (Covington, Ky./Holy Cross) on the offensive side, where she went 3-for-4 from 3 point range helping close the gap between the Lions and the Spartans. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) was a defense superstar with four rebounds and a steal holding Manchester to only 11 points in the second quarter.
After halftime The Mount came out for quarter number three ready to make up the difference. The Mount was not able to be victorious this quarter but kept the deficit manageable going into the final quarter. Where The Mount was able to make up the difference and even more. They were about to stop the Spartans on the defensive side with seven rebounds and three steals in the fourth quarter alone. The Lions found themselves at the free throw line making seven of their eight attempts. In the end The Mount found a way to grind it out and take home their first conference victory of the season.
Tucker was the leading offensive force for the entire game with a career high of 30 points in a single game, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Followed behind with Haberthy and Brooklynn Sturwold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) who combined for 21 points, 5 steals and 8 rebounds. Aliyah Huff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) made a splash securing 6 points and being perfect from the free throw line.
