Mount St. Joseph started the game off strong, taking a lead in the first quarter. The Mount was able to hold their lead going into halftime with the score at 44-36. The Grizzlies began to get back in the game in the second half. They were able to decrease the lead and get within two points of the Lions going into the final quarter. The Lions fought to keep the lead but came up short as they were defeated by the Grizzlies 72-68.
How it Happened:
The Mount was able to get out to an early lead against the Grizzlies. They outscored them in the first quarter 19-13 to take a six point lead. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Holy Cross) led the team in the first quarter draining two three point field goals. In the second, the Lions continued to play well. Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross) took over the game for the Lions putting up 13 points in the quarter. This would give The Mount the lead going into halftime with a score of 44-36. The Lions looked to finish strong in the second half to seal the victory, but the Grizzlies began to battle back. They were able to erase the Lions lead and tie the score at 53-53 with under a minute left in the third quarter. The Mount was able to take a two point lead going into the final quarter with the score at 56-54. Late in the fourth the Lions held the lead by one point with 2:30 left in the game. The lead would change back and forth in the final minutes with some clutch baskets from Tucker keeping the Lions in the lead 68-67 with only 1:16 left on the clock. Franklin was able to score a layup with 52 seconds remaining to take back the lead 69-68. The Mount fouled the Grizzlies at the end of the game to get a chance at regaining the lead, but Franklin was able to take home the win after making some late free throws to seal it. The Lions were defeated with a final score of 72-68.
Tucker exploded with a 29 point performance for the Lions. She was also able to finish the game with 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) continues to play well week after week to keep the Lions in the mix. She finished the game today with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals.
The Lions (10-13, 6-10) will host Hanover College (14-8, 10-5) in the last home game of the year in the Harrington Center. The game is set for Wednesday, 2/14 at 7:30 PM.
