Mount St. Joseph falls in double overtime battle with Hanover

The Basics:

Mount St. Joseph found themselves in an intense battle with HCAC competitor Hanover College. The game was kept close in the first half. Multiple lead changes gave neither team the advantage as the Lions led at halftime 41-38. In the second half the score stayed close between the two teams. Hanover was able to take the lead from the Lions in the third 62-54. The Lions were able to fight back and tie the score at the end of regulation to force overtime.  In the first overtime period both teams stayed evenly matched.  Hanover was able to tie the game with two free throws to force another overtime period. In the second overtime, Hanover was able to outlast the Lions defeating them with a final score of 99-90.

How it Happened:

The game started as a close contest between both teams fighting for their position in the HCAC. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mother of Mercy) was able to start the game off strong for the Lions scoring 11 points in the first quarter. The score remained close but the Lions lead the Panthers 27-26 at the end of the first. The Mount continued to play hard in the first half outscoring the Panthers 14-12 in the second quarter of play. This gave Mount St. Joseph the lead 41-38 going into halftime. The Panthers looked to get back in the game in the third. They outscored the Mount 24-13 to take the lead going into the final quarter of play with the score at 62-54. The Lions would not give up easily as they looked to decrease the deficit in the final quarter of regulation. After a jump shot from Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami), the Lions were down 72-69 with only 1:30 left in the game. Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, OH/ Kings) was able to drain a clutch three pointer to tie the game for the Lions with under a minute left. This shot would force the game into overtime with both teams tied at 72-72. In the overtime period the Lions were able to get the lead after back to back three point shots from Studer and Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross). This gave the Mount the lead 78-74. The Lions would hold the lead up until the final minutes of the overtime period. The Panthers were able to make two free throws down the stretch to tie the game at 84-84 with only 16 second left. This forced another overtime period. The Panthers got the better of the Lions in the second overtime outscoring them 15-6 to win the game with a final of 99-90.


Haberthy had a huge game for the Lions. She totaled 27 points as she was able to shoot 4-6 from three point range. Tucker and Studer were also able to make a huge impact on the game. Tucker totaled 17 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals to help her team in the conference matchup. Studer was able to total 15 points, 4 assists, and 11 rebounds in the Lions overtime thriller.

The Lions (8-8, 4-5) will host Anderson University (0-16, 0-9) in their next HCAC contest this Saturday, 1/20. Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM in the Harrington Center Gym.
