Mount St. Joseph and Rose-Hulman were in a tight contest for most of the first half. Both teams played with high intensity resulting in many changes to who held the lead. The Lions trailed at the half 31-26. Coming into the second half both teams looked to try and pull away. The Lions outscored the Engineers 18-7 in the third quarter to put themselves in the lead going into the fourth. Late in the quarter, Rose-Hulman was able to take the lead after a layup to go up two points over the Mount. The Lions were unable to answer and tie the score, resulting in the Engineers defeating the Lions with a final of 52-50.
How it Happened:
The game started off close as both teams seemed evenly matched. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mother of Mercy) started the game off on fire scoring 13 points in the first quarter to put the Lions ahead of Rose-Hulman. The score was 18-16 at the end of the first quarter. The Engineers were able to bounce back in the second quarter shooting 83 percent and outscoring the Lions 15-8. This gave Rose-Hulman the lead going into halftime 31-26. The Mount came out for the second half ready to take back the lead. Several Lions were able to produce on the offensive side to get the Mount back into the game. They outscored the Engineers 18-7 in the third quarter which gave them a 44-38 point lead going into the fourth. The fourth quarter came down to the wire as both teams kept the score close. After Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross) was able to score a layup for the Lions, the score was even at 50-50 with under a minute left remaining. Rose-Hulman was able to take the lead with a late score to go up 52-50 with only 21 seconds remaining in the game. The Lions would have an opportunity to tie the score, but after a missed three pointer and missed jump shot, the Lions came up short against the Engineers. The game ended with Rose-Hulman on top with a final score of 52-50.
Maddie Haberthy led the team in scoring with a total of 18 points. She also recorded 3 assists as she was able to set up her teammates for scoring opportunities on multiple occasions. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) also had a successful night totaling 10 points, 2 assists, and 6 rebounds.
The Lions (4-3, 1-1) will travel for another conference matchup against Anderson (0-8, 0-3) this Saturday, 12/9. Tip off will start at 1:00 PM as the Lions look to improve their conference record.
