Lions Fall Short in Tight Game against Centre

The Basics:

Both teams were caught in a tightly contested game. The score was kept close with multiple lead changes in the first half. The halftime score was tied at 22. The intensity of the game continued into the second half as both teams continued to fight for the win. Centre came out on top after taking the lead in the final seconds to beat the Lions with a final of 59-58.

How it Happened:

The game started extremely competitive as both teams kept the score close. The Lions were down 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued to be a close contest with multiple lead changes. At the half, both teams were tied at 22 apiece. Courtney Merritt (Cincinnati, OH) led the Lions in scoring at the half with nine points. Coming out into the second half the Lions were able to take the lead at 26-22 after two free throws from Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mother of Mercy) early in the third quarter. The Mount was able to hold a lead for a majority of the third quarter, until Centre made two free throws and a layup to tie the score at 38-38 going into the fourth. Late in the fourth quarter, both teams were tied at 53. Haberthy was able to make a 3-point basket to put the Lions in front. Centre answered with two free throws to make the score 56-55. Centre was able to steal the ball for a layup, which put them in front of the Lions with under a minute left remaining in the game. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) rose up to sink a jump shot with only eight seconds remaining to put the Mount in the lead with the score at 57-56. In the final seconds, Centre was able to get to the rim to steal the lead and defeat the Lions with a final score of 59-58.


The team was led by freshman Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross) with a total of 15 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Maddie Haberthy also had an outstanding performance, as she was able to score all of her 14 points in the second half to keep the Lions in the game.

Mount St. Joseph (3-2) will host their first conference game this weekend on Saturday, 12/2. They are set to face Manchester University (1-3) in the Harrington Center at 3:00 PM.
