CLERMONT, Florida-- The Mount St. Joseph softball team kicked off their annual spring break trip with a split today. In game one they defeated Finlandia by a score of 3-2, then fell to Olivet 11-7.
Mount St. Joseph sent freshman Sarah Miller (Fishers, IN/ St. Theodore Guerin) to the hill to open the week of play. She would continue the outstanding start to her collegiate career. Miller pitcher her second complete game of the season allowing six hits, and two earned runs, while striking out seven Finlandia batters. For her effort she would earn her third win on the young season.
The Mount was only able to manage five hits in the game, but two came off the bat of standout catcher Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, IN/East Central). Sturgill also drove in two of the Lions three runs in the game. The other RBI came off the bat of Brandy Bunch (Mason, OH/Mason) who was 1-for-3 in the game.
In game two The Mount sent junior Brianna Kauf (Orrville, OH/Orrville) to the hill. She would not have the best outing of her career. All told she threw 4 innings allowing 6 hits, and 5 earned runs. Olivia Burger (Cleves, OH/Taylor) would relieve Kauf to open up the fifth inning with a 6-4 lead, and was only able to register a single out. She would be charged with the first loss of her collegiate career in the game.
Offensively the Lions managed nine hits in the loss. Four Lions registered multi-hit performances in the game. Sturgill, Miller, Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/Holy Cross), and Gracie Woodyard (Plainfield, IN/Avon) each were responsible for two hits. Tucker added a pair of stolen bases in the loss.
The Lions (4-2) will continue the Clermont Spring Games tomorrow as they square off with Albright and Wisconsin-Stout.
