LOCATION: Cincinnati, OH
The Lions hosted the visiting Redmen of Carthage College and Cardinals of North Central College. In their first match against Carthage, the Lions fought late in the match but weren't able to overcome the deficit, falling 3-1. In the second match against North Central, the Lions weren't able to find any momentum, dropping the match 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
MSJ vs. Carthage
In the first set against Carthage College the Lions got off to a slow start. After finding themselves down for most of the set, the Lions rallied back to tie the score at 19. The Lions kept the set close but weren't able to capitalize on the final points, dropping the set 25-22. The Mount picked up their play in the second set and led early but Carthage found a way to fight back. The score was kept within two points for most of the set but back to back errors by the Lions gave the Redmen the second set ,26-24. The third set was once again a battle for both teams, neither able to gain a solid lead. The Lions were able to take the third set in a tight 25-23 match with a kill from Ben Holt (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon). The fourth set was another back and forth affair due to great defense from both teams. The Redmen were able to gain a lead late in the set and finished off the match 25-22.
MSJ vs. North Central
In the second day of play the Lions got off to a slow start. They weren't able to find any offensive momentum and quickly found themselves at a deficit. The match looked out of hand but the Lions managed to fight back and bring the set within two points. Back to back kills from the Cardinals gave North Central the first set with a final of 25-20. The Lions picked up their play in the second set to battle with the Cardinals early. After trading points, North Central was able to gain a slight lead and the Lions weren't able to overcome the deficit, dropping the second set 25-17. The Lions struggles continued into the third set as they would take a deficit early in the set. The Lions brought the set within one point halfway through but North Central continued their success by earning the four points. The Lions offensive struggles continued to plague them throughout the match as they would go on to drop the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Andrew Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) led the charge for the Lions offense over the weekend, earning 17 kills while hitting an outstanding .505. Joey Piazza (Cuyahoga Falls, OH / Walsh Jesuit) defended well for the Lions, getting 15 digs in two matches.
The Lions look to continue their regular season success in the MCVL Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Lions will face the Carthage Redmen in the first round, starting Friday at 5PM. Check MSJSports.com for more updates!
