Lions fall to Oglethorpe in close contest

Location: Schueler Field (Cincinnati, OH)

The Basics:

Mount St. Joseph faced Oglethorpe University in their first matchup of the weekend.  The Lions started the game with a goal in the first couple seconds of the game to take the lead.  After that Oglethorpe was able to jump in front and increase their lead in the second quarter.  The Lions fought hard but came up short to the Petrels with a final score of 9-5.

How it Happened:

The Lions started the game off aggressive with a goal from Matt Stecht (Erlanger, KY/ Holy Cross) in the opening seconds.  Oglethorpe was able to answer back with two goals in the first quarter to take the lead going into the second period.  The Petrels were able to jump into a demanding lead over the Lions after scoring five goals in the second half.  Jesse Purdy (Lexington, KY/ Dunbar) was able to put up a goal to make the score 7-2 at the half.  The Mount fought hard in the second half as it became a very physical contest between both teams.  Seth Poirier (Somerville, OH/ Talawanda) and Purdy were able to connect with the net in the third period as the Lions trailed 9-4 going into the final quarter.  Poirier was able to score another goal for the Mount but it wasn't enough as the Lions were defeated with a final score of 9-5.

Standouts:

Purdy was able to show up huge for the Lions.  He was able to record an assist on the first goal of the game and also got to the net twice himself to keep the score close.
