WOOSTER, Ohio-- The Mount St. Joseph men's golf team took to the course at the Wooster Country Club in Wooster, Ohio looking to win their second tournament of the week. After rain cut short the tournament and washed away Sunday's round the Lions did just that. The competition was stiff in the tournament as they faced off with OAC foes The College of Wooster, John Carroll University, Mount Union, Baldwin Wallace University, Capital University, Heidleberg University and Marietta College, also in the tournament were Bluffton University, and Denison University.
Leading the way again for The Mount was Senior Mikel Merker (Dayton, OH/West Carrolton) who was coming off his first victory of the spring season just four days prior. Merker would again find himself atop the leaderboard, winning his second tournament championship this week. Merker tied for the lead with Jimmy Hinton from Wooster, they both poured in even-par 72 stroke rounds.
Merker was joined near the top of the leaderboard by freshman Ethan McCarthy (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills). McCarthy poured in a 1-over par 73, which was good for third place overall in the tournament. Joining McCarthy and Merker in the top-5 for the Lions were three seniros, Andrew Ruehle (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington North), Kyle Miller (New Vienna, OH/East Clinton) and Kevin Imhulse (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington). Ruehle scored a 5-over 77, Miller and Imhulse both delivered 6-over par 78's, helping the Lions to a team score of 300. They would need every stroke as the defeated the College of Wooster by only one stroke.
The Lions will take to the links again next weekend as they travel to Defiance, Ohio for the Defiance Invitational. The tournament will take place at the Eagle Rock Golf Club, where the Lions will look to keep this hot streak going!
