Lions get first win of the season behind Cropper's double-double

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph men's basketball team welcomed the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, the Muskingum Muskies and the North Park Knights to Cincinnati, Ohio and the Harrington Center for the teams annual MSJ Tipoff Classic over the weekend. On day one of the competition the Lions squared off with Yellow Jackets following and extremely tight contest between North Park and Muskingum. The Lions came into the game on the heels of two lopsided losses away from home, in which they struggled to not turn over the basketball. In this one they would be much stronger with the ball to the tune of only committing a season low eight turnovers. This along with stellar defense went a long way in helping the Lions secure their first win of the young season.

The action was back and forth throughout the early minutes of the game. The teams exchanged four lead changes and were tied 6 times over the opening 7:34 of the game. With Waynesburg holding the advantage for much of that time. The Mount trailing 13-9, made an obvious effort to start playing through the post and freshman Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky./South Olham). He scored four of the Lions next six points while assisting on the other, pushing the Lions ahead 15-13, they would not trail again in the game

The Yellow Jackets kept the score tight and even tied it again at 22, with 5:49 to play in the first half. The Mount then closed the first half on a 16-6 run to go into the half with a 10-point advantage. Young scored 11 points in the first half and Shaun Sullivan (Louisville, KY./DeSales) kicked in 9 in his first action of the 2018-19 season.

The second half was completely dominated by The Mount as Jake Cropper (Georgetown, Ohio/Georgetown) scored 28 of his career-high 38 points in the final 20 minutes. Cropper outscored Waynesburg by himself as the Lions defense held the Jackets to only 26 second half points. Brady Thomas (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready) was able to score 8 of his 11 in the second half as well.

The Lions will take to the court again tomorrow as a part of the MSJ Tipoff Classic where they will play Muskingum at approximately 3:00 PM.
