Rick Thompson enters his sixth season on the Lions’ coaching staff and his fifth as the Defensive Coordinator at the Mount.
In his first season at the Mount, Coach Thompson served as the Lions' Special Team Coordinator and Linebackers coach. In 2013, the team led the conference in in Field Goal Percentage and Punt Average. Thompson coached and mentored the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Most Valuable Player and 1st Team All-HCAC Kicker Shane Kelly while also coaching Punter Greg Tabar to Second Team All-HCAC. Furthermore, Thompson saw two of his Linebackers garner Second Team All-HCAC honors. In his second season Thompson assumed the role of Defensive Coordinator. His defense led the HCAC in Total Defense, Scoring Defense, Pass Defense, Interceptions, and Defensive Touchdowns in 2014. In 2016, the defense again led the HCAC in Total Defense while finishing second in Scoring Defense and Pass Defense. Last season, the Lions finished second in the HCAC in Scoring Defense, Interceptions, and Sacks. Thompson's leadership of the defense has helped 25 Lions garner All-HCAC accolades (Nine First-Team, Nine Second-Team, and 7 Honorable mentions), including former players such as DB Marvin Draper (2014 & 2015) and DL Nolan Miller (2016 & 2017) as well as current players DB Tyler Hannah (2015 - 2017) and Tavon Robertson (2016 & 2017).
Before joining the Mount, Coach Thompson was the Head Coach at Boone County (KY) High School. He has had a long and distinguished high school coaching career that includes stops at Beechwood High School and Campbell County High School. Though he had other stops earlier in his career Thompson called Boone County HS home for over 25 years. He served as the Defensive Coordinator for 11 seasons (1985 -1987, 1989-1996) before taking being named Head Coach in December of 1997. In his lone season away from Boone County in 1988, Thompson served as a Defensive Graduate Assistant for Dave Currey at the University of Cincinnati working with the Defensive Line.
As the head coach at Boone County for 15 years, Coach Thompson was the head coach twice for the NKY All-Star game, was on the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star game coaching staff (2012) and on the Best of the Bluegrass All-Star game selection committee (2005-2010). He helped direct his high school team to two state semifinal appearances, five regional finals, and five district championships. Thompson was named the 2004 Kentucky Post Coach of the Year, 2004 and 2007 Cincinnati Bengals High School Coach of the Year, and the 2008 KYSCA District Coach of the Year.
Thompson is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University and earned his master’s degree from Xavier University. He is happily married to his wife Mary Kay and has two children, Chloe’ and Bryson. They reside in Florence, Kentucky.
