COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team traveled north to take on the Crusaders of Capital University in a sunny afternoon game on Wednesday. The Lions were able to take home a win over the Crusaders after falling behind and going scoreless in 3 innings with an 8-4 victory.
To get things started on the mound for The Lions was senior Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati,Ohio/Roger Bacon) getting his second start of the season. Honebrink would face 29 Crusaders, only allowing 6 hits but giving up 3 of Capital's 4 runs while striking out 4, over a span of 7 innings.
The Crusaders were first on the board as they scored an unearned run off an RBI in the bottom of the first inning. The game went scoreless through the 2nd and 3rd inning before The Lions were able to get on the board. The end of the 3rd inning would be the last time the Crusaders held the lead over The Lions, as The Mount was able to get two runners home in the top of the 4th inning. Junior, Roman Rothwell (Monroe,Ohio/Monroe) was the first Lion to score on a single by freshman Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati,Ohio/Western Hills) that was hit down the right field line. Hunter Collins (Middletown,Ohio/Middletown) was next up to bat, hitting a SAC FLY to center field, giving enough room for Jose Bustamante (Austell,GA/South Cobb) to score. At the end of the 4th, The Lions led the Crusaders 2-1.
The 5th inning saw The Lions bringing in multiple runs. Three of the four runs came off of a Roman Rothwell double that was hit to center field. Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati,Ohio/St. Xavier), Ryne Poli (Cincinnati,Ohio/Elder), and Colin Crowe (Mason,Ohio/Mason) were all able to make it across home plate, helping to continue build The Lions lead. Rothwell was then able to score himself as Tyrell Anderson stepped up to bat two batters later, hitting a single to center field. The Crusaders were able to get two runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th inning, making the score 6-3 in favor of The Lions.
The Lions added one more run in the 6th inning as Roman Rothwell continued his hot hitting, with a single to left field in which Simon Schaefer was able to score. The Lions were able to hold the Crusaders scoreless through the 6th and 7th inning. The 8th inning was the end of the scoring, as both teams were able to bring in one run each. For The Lions Roman Rothwell saw himself running across home plate off a Jose Bustamante single to right field, earning The Lions 8th and final run of the game.
Freshman Lukas Palmieri (Fairfield,Ohio/Fairfield) took the mound in the bottom of the 8th inning. He would go on to pitch just one inning, facing just 6 batters and allowing the Crusaders two hits and one earned run off of a home run.
Entering the 9th inning, The Lions led the Crusaders 8-4, both teams went scoreless in the 9th as The Lions were unable to get into scoring position and sophomore Oakley Billingsley (Westport,IN/South Decatur) stepped up on the mound, facing only 3 batters and allowing the Crusaders only one hit. The Lions were able to walk away with their 7th victory of the season, defeating the Crusaders 8-4 on the road.
The Lions next games will take place on Saturday, March 30th as they take on the Fightin' Engineers of Rose Hulman in their first conference double header of the season in Terre Haute, IN.
