Lions Overpowered by Dutch in Florida

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Mount St. Joseph Lions baseball team took on the Dutch of Central College in day two of the Russ-Matt Invitational. The Lions were unable to compete against the Dutch's aggressive offense as they fell victim to Central College by a score of 14-1.

The Lions could not contain the Dutch's offensive force, as the Dutch were able to score in six out of the nine innings. The Lions only run of the game came in the bottom 5th inning. Throughout the game The Lions went through a rotation of pitchers to try to contain the Dutch. Sophomore Nathan Renner(Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper) was first up on the mound for The Lions. Renner pitched 4 innings for The Lions, allowing 6 runs, and threw for 3 strikeouts before Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon) relieved him of his duties on the mound. Honebrink pitched for 2 innings, allowing 2 runs to score, and also striking out 3.

The Lions only run of the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning when senior Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) stepped up to bat with one out remaining. The Lions had a man on 2nd and 3rd as Schaefer hit a single down left field allowing Colin Crowe (Mason, OH / Mason) to score. The Dutch would not allow any other Lions from crossing the plate the rest of the game.

Oakley Billingsley (Westport, IN / South Decatur) took over the mound in the 7th inning. Billingsley would go on to allow no hits through the 7th and 8th inning, while giving up 3 walks and earning 3 strikeouts. Hunter Mills (Cincinnati, OH / Turpin) was next up on the mound for The Lions as the game entered the 9th inning. The Dutch would get the best of Mills as 6 runners would score, bringing the Dutch's score to 14. Jacob Hughes (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) would end the game on the mound for The Lions, only allowing one hit and throwing one strike out.
