Lions play two against visiting Ravens

FLORENCE, Ky. – The Lions played two games over the weekend against the Ravens of Anderson University to continue their conference play. Game one featured great pitching from both squads, with the Mount allowing two runs late in the game, bringing the final score to 2-1. In Game two the Lions were able to score 4 runs off 5 hits but struggled defensively with 5 errors. The Lions fell to the Ravens, 9-4.

Game 1

Junior Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) was sent to the mound for the Lions in game one and would not disappoint. In his seventh appearance this season Wagner went 8 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts, but ultimately resulting in the loss. Wagner leads the Lions with 35 strikeouts for the 2018 season.

The Lions offense struggled in game one. The team was creating chances with hitters reaching base consistently, but weren't able to get key hits to bring those runners home, stranding a total of 15 runners.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 7th inning until either team got on the scoreboard. After two singles and a fielder's choice, Darren Sackett (Loveland, OH / Loveland) stepped to the plate and singled down the right field line, bringing home a run. Anderson quickly answered with two runs in the 8th off multiple singles. Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) came into the game in the 9th and tallied two strikeouts of his own. Final score of Game one was 2-1, Ravens.

Game 2

The HCAC leader in earned run average Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper) toed the mound for the Lions in game two on Saturday. Renner accounted for 4 2/3 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts in the loss.

Anderson was first on the board with a run in the 1st inning. With one out and a man on base in the top of the 3rd, a ball off the bat of a Raven was driven to deep left center field. Center fielder Trevor Theuerling (Cincinnati, OH / Clark Montessori) chased the ball down and made a miraculous diving catch that saved the Lions multiple runs.

The Lions achieved their first run with an RBI single to left center from Luke Bowman (Harrison, OH / Harrison) in the 4th. Up one, Anderson scored four runs in the 5th, bringing the score to 6-1.

The Lions were able to score 3 runs in the 7th behind Brandon Shelton's (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) double off the left field wall. Anderson plated 3 more runs in the top half of the 8th, resulting in a final score to 9-4.

After the games, the Lions moved to 10-12 on the year and 1-4 in HCAC competition. Anderson goes to 17-11 and 6-0 in conference play.

The Lions will play a doubleheader this Saturday, the 14th against the Bluffton Beavers. First pitch is scheduled for 1PM and Game two at 4PM. Check into MSJsports.com for updates on the Lions season.
