LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team faced off against the Transylvania Pioneers at Marquard Field on Tuesday in a doubleheader. The Lions tallied 19 hits for the day but fell to the Pioneers 7-2 in game one, and 8-6 in game two.
Senior Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) was given the nod in game one and gave the Lions four and a third innings, allowing 6 runs, off 11 hits and 2 strikeouts in the loss. Handling relief efforts was Mike Hilliard (Loveland, OH / Clinton Massie) who went three and two thirds an inning, giving up 1 run, off 4 hits, and 2 strikeouts. Myers faced 27 Pioneer hitters and Hilliard 14.
The Lions got off to a good start with two runs in the 1st inning. With two outs and a man on first base, Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) would double off the center field wall, plating the first run of the game. Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) was due up next and delivered with a double of his own to left center bringing home Hogan.
The Pioneers would not be deterred as they scored 4 runs in the 1st inning, and 2 more in the 2nd. The Lions did not score again in the game, but would threaten in the 3rd and the 9th, but couldn't regain the lead, losing game one 7-2.
Game two started similar to the first with the Lions scoring first in the top of the 2nd inning. After a one out walk, Brandon Mueller (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) homered to left center for his second home run on the season and an early 2-0 lead for the Lions.
In the 4th inning with runners on the corners, Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) would deliver with a single up the middle and plating a run. The Lions would load the bases, but the Pioneers completed a crucial double play that stopped a run from scoring in the inning. With runners in scoring position, Nathan Hunter (Vevay, IN / Switzerland County) tripled to center field for 2 RBI's. Jose Bustamante (Austell, GA / South Cobb) singled home Hunter and bringing the score to 6-0 at the end of 4.
Transy's hitters got hot after the 4th inning, and plated 8 runs in the final four innings, bringing the final score to 8-6.
The Lions starter, Jason Fischer (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain) pitched well and gave the Lions a great opportunity to win the game. Fischer went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs off 2 hits, and striking out 9 Pioneers. Shelton came in the game in the 7th and allowed 4 runs, but only one of them was earned. Hogan (1-1), who received the loss, recorded the last two outs of the game.
The Lions move to 10-10 overall and 1-2 in the HCAC. Transylvania moves to 11-11 and 2-2 in HCAC play.
The Lions will play again this Saturday as they host the Anderson University at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Ky. It is set for a doubleheader, weather permitting, as first pitch for game one is scheduled at 1PM and game two at 4PM. Tune into MSJsports.com to check in on the Lions season!
